My Specializations for Enteral feeds in Sri Lanka

I am expert in developing an enteral feeds diet that suits your medical need

As an Enteral Feeds Diet Expert, I understand the importance of ensuring that patients receiving enteral feeds are receiving proper nutrition to support their health and recovery. Enteral feeds are an essential form of nutrition for patients who are unable to eat or have difficulty swallowing.

Types of feeding tubes

  • Through the nose (non-surgical)
  • Through a small cut or incision in the abdomen (surgical)

The most common feeding tubes include nasogastric tubes (NG tubes) and gastrostomy tubes (G tubes). However, there are several types of feeding tubes based on how and where they are placed in the digestive system.

During illness and recovery, some patients may not be able to get all the calories and nutrients they need by mouth. This is no one’s fault. It is important to help children understand that nutrition support (enteral nutrition) is not a punishment. Most children adapt well to having a feeding tube.

Here are some important considerations when developing an enteral feeds diet:

  • Determine the appropriate formula for the patient based on their individual needs. This may include formulas that are high in protein, low in sugar, or have specialized nutrients to address specific medical conditions.

  • Ensure the formula is administered at the appropriate rate and volume to prevent complications such as diarrhea, constipation, or dehydration.

  • Monitor the patient's tolerance to the formula, including any adverse reactions or symptoms, and adjust the formula as necessary.

  • Consider the patient's medical conditions and medications when selecting an enteral feeds formula, as some may interact with certain medications or exacerbate certain conditions.

  • Provide adequate hydration to prevent dehydration, which can be a common side effect of enteral feeds.

  • Evaluate the patient's nutritional status regularly to ensure they are receiving adequate nutrition and adjust the formula as needed.

  • Collaborate with the healthcare team to develop a comprehensive care plan that addresses the patient's overall health needs.

It's important to work closely with the healthcare team to ensure the patient's enteral feeds diet is appropriate for their individual needs and to monitor their progress regularly. By providing proper nutrition through enteral feeds, we can support the patient's health and recovery.
